How to Support Cottey College in NC?

How can I get involved? What can we do in North Carolina?

Sometimes the only way we think about supporting Cottey College is through our monetary support and referring young women to our college. But there are many other ways to show support …

So, Let’s Explore Other Opportunities to Get Involved!

  1. Explore the Cottey College Website (http://www.cottey.edu/peo/) as well as the Cottey info on the International website (https://www.peointernational.org/cottey-peo) and State website (https://www.peonc.org).  You can have a Chapter Program where you have access to the internet and demonstrate how to surf around these web pages.  Maybe your Chapter Technology Chair can help your Chapter Cottey College Rep.  There is so much information out there to share!
  2. Order a few supplies that are free from the Cottey College web site under the P.E.O. tab “Promote Cottey” and use them when visiting local high school guidance counselors or just have on hand. You can also hang them in pediatricians’ offices, women’s health centers, banks, churches, etc.
  3. Consider going to Vacation College in the summer with some of your sisters, non-P.E.O. friends, or your BIL. You can also go alone only to find NEW sister friends in Nevada! Once you have visited Cottey, you’ll be thrilled to share what you have learned!
  4. Tell your Chapter President you would like to be the Cottey College Rep for your chapter and then call your NC Regional Rep and Connect and Explore!
  5. Nevada, Missouri…in the middle of it all! Sometimes you can plan a “swing by” visit when you are on another trip. Even just driving through the campus gives you a better feel for our wonderful Cottey.
  6. Cottey now has 8 sports:  Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country, Flag Football, Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field, and ESports.  Fo more information on athletics at Cottey, click on this link:  https://cotteycomets.com/landing/index
  7. Invite your NC Regional Rep to have a Cottey College table at Reciprocity Meetings.
  8. Visit your local Dance Studios and leave some Cottey information. There is a strong dance community at Cottey and there are scholarships for students interested in pursuing dance.
  9. Get to know your local music teachers at area high schools and share information about Cottey College. There is a robust music and choral program at Cottey.  Did you know students can take lessons in most instruments for free while attending Cottey?
  10. Have your Chapter support students in the Southeastern Suite. You can shower them with care packages or “Cottey Cash”. Look for more information on the NC website or Cottey website. (http://www.cottey.edu/peo/support-students/)
  11. Have your Chapter sign up to support one of our NC students with a monthly care package. You can find out more about that program by contacting your NC Regional Rep.
  12. Consider a specific fund raiser for Cottey with your Chapter or consider joining forces with neighboring Chapters.  In NC, we support the North Carolina Cottey College Scholarship Fund (NCCCSF) and the C for Yourself Initiative. The Local Chapter Donation Form has a section for each of these funds.
  13. Find out if your Middle or High Schools participate in Odyssey of the Mind or Science Olympiad.  Offer to sponsor the snacks at a meeting or hang a Cottey College Info Banner at local events.  If a team gets recognition deliver congratulatory snacks with a Cottey Card to the female members.
  14. Share your Cottey College Programs with your NC Regional Rep so we can get them posted to the NC website for all to use!
  15. Gather professional/interview clothing of various sizes and donate to the Leadership Opportunity Program, (LEO) Professional Clothes Closet at Cottey College. A few items go along way!  (http://www.cottey.edu/learn-and-lead/serenbetz-institute/)
  16. Read “The Life of Virginia Alice Cottey”, by Helen DeRusha Troesch, PhD. This book is available on Amazon and though the Cottey College Bookstore.  Could this be a P.E.O. Book Club Choice? Maybe a non P.E.O. club to stir up some interest?  (http://www.cottey.edu/campus-community/bookstore/merchandise/#VACS)
  17. Another good book (by a Cottey graduate) is,” The Moonflower Vine”. The author, Jetta Carleton graduated from Cottey in 1933.  Her novel has had a recent revival and attention.
  18. Find out if you have a Girl Scout Troop in your area. Regional Offices can help make these contacts. Speaking to a local or regional group of girls and parents about Cottey may be really fun.  (http://www.girlscouts.org/en/about-girl-scouts/join/council-finder.html)
  19. Scout out summer camps for girls. Ask if you deliver information or sponsor a snack or event during sessions.  (https://www.camppage.com/summer-camps/girls-camps/girls-camps-southeast.htm)
  20. Investigate the Women’s College Coalition. They have a fantastic web site, (womenscolleges.org).  You could do some reading and research and perhaps do a program on why single gender education and choosing a women’scollege is relevant and important.  You may just want to know yourself!
  21. Have refreshments at a meeting, or a dinner gathering or potluck using recipes from the “The Best of Cottey College Cooking”, authored by the current chef, Michael Richardson. This book is available at the Cottey Bookstore and Amazon.  (http://www.cottey.edu/campus-community/bookstore/merchandise/#Cookbook)
  22. Make sure you know if there are Cottey grads in your Chapter, or if members have daughters or other relatives who have graduated from Cottey College.  If you are aware of alumna in your area who are not already P.E.O. members, please inquire if they are interested in becoming a P.E.O. member.  Graduates can do great programs or informal question and answer sessions.  Perhaps Cottey grads can speak to other Chapters or Reciprocities about their experience.
  23. Learn about the Southeastern Suite Consortium of which NC is a member. Look for more information on the NC P.E.O. website about the Southeastern Suite at Cottey.
  24. Your Chapter can help a student with air fare or other travel expenses above what is reimbursed by the State Chapter through the NC ‘C” for Yourself Reserve.
  25. Groups of Sisters have planned their one trip with their own itinerary and route, with the destination being Nevada MO.!
  26. When Sisters or alum in your area attend their reunions, invite them to tell the Chapter about the experience. What a great idea for program.
